The non-profit Solar and Energy Loan Fund (SELF) received more good news this week from Dignity Health, a California-based not-for-profit public-benefit corporation founded in 1986 by the Sisters of Mercy. Dignity Health is made up of more than 60,000 caregivers and staff who deliver excellent care to diverse communities in 21 states. Headquartered in San Francisco, Dignity Health is the fifth largest health system in the nation who also provides low-interest loans to non-profits to improve underserved communities.
Dignity Health notified SELF that the non-profit community lending institution was approved for a $250,000 loan to advance sustainable affordable housing for low income families and seniors in Florida. Dignity Health's Community Investments are loans made at below-market interest rates for nonprofit organizations working to improve community health and quality of life. Since 1992, Dignity Health has loaned more than $88.1 million to 185 nonprofit organizations.
SELF is a mission-driven lender that provides building science expertise, low-cost financing for sustainable home improvement projects, and project management from start to finish. SELF finances new roofs, windows, doors, air conditioners, hurricane shutters, solar water heaters, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, LED lights, weatherization, and more. SELF was created in the summer of 2010, and to date has financed more than $4 million of sustainable home improvement projects. SELF has helped nearly 500 families and individuals in 17 counties in Florida, with more than 2/3rds of the lending activity in low- and moderate- income communities, 40% for women, and 20% for military families and veterans.
SELF’s Chief Financial Officer, Duanne Andrade, said, “This investment helps us advance our common social and environmental missions and provides more favorable terms (6-7 years) for small residential solar PV projects.”
